TODAY'S DAR

Today's DAR is a diverse group of women aged 18 years and up. Women in Today's DAR come from a variety of backgrounds, religions, careers, politics and experiences all coming together for the same goal to protect and promote patriotism, education and history. Today's DAR members are dedicated to their love of God, Home, and Country.

When you join the DAR you can choose to be as active and as involved as you want to be. If you choose to get involved you will gain a sense of accomplishment by giving back to your community and you will meet some of the most amazing women in the process.  Below you will find some of the chapter activities and projects. Consider joining in on the fun!

AMERICAN HERITAGE

The DAR works to preserve our rich American heritage in the fields of art, crafts, drama, and literature. The El Redondo Chapter members support this effort by entering California State Society Daughters of the American Revolution and National Society Daughters of the American Revolution contests.

The DAR recognizes the needs within Native American communities and works to provide financial assistance and educational aid to Native American youth. El Redondo Chapter members knit or crochet neck scarves for students at Chemawa Indian School for a Gift Workshop at the December meeting. Members also collect Campbell’s Labels for Education (UPC Points) and Box Tops for Education that are collected at each meeting to be sent to the Chemawa Indian School.

CHILDREN OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (C.A.R.)

The DAR works to promote the work and principles of C.A.R. and to interest chapters in sponsorship, leadership and promotion of its work and activities. El Redondo members visit museums and invite children to support this effort. Children are invited to participate in the December and April gift bag workshops. Local Scout Troops participate in the wreath-laying ceremony on Veterans Day in November. 

DAR GOOD CITIZENS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

The DAR recognizes and rewards male and female high school seniors who exemplify the qualities of a good citizen: service, dependability, leadership, and patriotism. The El Redondo Chapter offers recognition and scholarships to outstanding high school and college students.

LITERACY PROMOTION 

The DAR reaches out in friendship to other groups promoting literacy, such as public libraries, after-school tutoring programs and adult literacy organizations. The El Redondo Chapter supports this effort by creating classroom book displays for local elementary schools. Members look for ways to volunteer to tutor.

DAR GENEALOGY PRESERVATION

DAR works to index genealogical, organizational and membership information into computerized, searchable databases to enhance the application approval and membership record retrieval processes. El Redondo members help aid in this process by doing computer work in the privacy of their own home.

DAR PROJECT PATRIOT

DAR organizes and coordinates support for those currently serving our country. El Redondo members donate material or sew quilts for service personnel in current conflicts abroad. They knit or crochet helmet beanies for soldiers.

THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The DAR recognizes the importance of keeping the Flag flying, to protect it continuously under all conditions, and to educate citizens regarding its correct usage. El Redondo Chapter members support this effort by passing out Flags and Flag Codes at celebrations for commemorative events, such as on Memorial Day at Veterans Memorial Park in Redondo Beach.

DAR SERVICE FOR VETERANS 

DAR works continuously to find new and better ways to serve our veterans while always maintaining our more traditional service in VA hospitals. El Redondo members support this effort with the Veterans Gift Bag Workshop in April. Members donate recycled magazines at each meeting that will be given to the veterans.

DAR SCHOOLS 

Two schools were founded by DAR State Societies – Tamassee DAR School, founded in 1919 by the South Carolina Daughters and Kate Duncan Smith DAR School, established in 1924 by the Alabama Daughters. These schools offer opportunities for an education & a safe place to live. El Redondo members collect Campbell’s Labels for Education (UPC points) to support this effort.

WOMEN’S ISSUES

DAR provides a platform from which to address current issues that are important to today’s women: health, career, and family. Members submit original essays about relevant personal topics to the CSSDAR and NSDAR contests.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION 

DAR encourages recognition of significant volunteer efforts in historic preservation at the community, state and national levels. The chapter offers recognition for outstanding volunteer work. Members place historic markers in the community. Members volunteer to serve as docent in museums.

JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP 

DAR encourages active participation by young women (18-35) in all phases of DAR service and to support the Junior Membership Committee’s official fundraising project, the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund. Members who qualify have the opportunity to volunteer as a Page at state and national meetings.

CONSTITUTION WEEK 

DAR emphasizes the responsibility of protecting and defending the Constitution, preserving it for posterity and studying the historical events from 1776 to 1791, with an emphasis on September, 1787. The chapter hosts the annual bell-ringing ceremony, Bells Across America, on Constitution Day. Constitution Week posters are placed in schools and libraries in the community. Children’s books about the Constitution are provided to local elementary schools.

NATIONAL DEFENSE

DAR assists members in carrying out the patriotic, educational and historical objectives of the National Society and to promote an enlightened public opinion. The chapter awards the DAR Bronze ROTC Medal to outstanding senior high school students at the March meeting.

AMERICANISM

DAR promotes knowledge, loyalty and love of country in the hearts and minds of American citizens, whether naturalized or citizens by birth. The chapter offers recognition to naturalized citizens through their volunteer work in the community.

DAR MAGAZINE 

DAR informs and motivates the membership to increase the visibility of the National Society within the community with the bimonthly American Spirit magazine and its companion Daughters newsletter, the Society’s official publications. Members are encouraged to subscribe to the magazine and to give subscriptions as gifts to friends. 

VOLUNTEER GENEALOGISTS 

The El Redondo Chapter members help to assist prospective members with research and to help them prepare for their applications. Members offer assistance to members who request help in preparing documentation for supplemental applications.
